Ok people,
this is a great way to save water so I know you
all want to know how to fit a water butt and a
rain diverter whilst doing your bit for the
environment.... well here goes...
The first thing you need to do is make sure you
have suitable space next to your downpipe (the
pipe that drains rain water from your roof) for
your butt to go!
Also you need to make sure you have a plastic
downpipe, not an iron one.
Now, I'm not sure that all rain diverters are
the same so just so you know the water butt I
am using is made by Wards and the rain diverter
is made by Wickes and all instructions I am
giving refer to using these products! (they may
vary from brand to brand so double check their
instructions before starting)
If at any time you are in doubt consult an
expert!

1.The first thing to do is
measure 30mm down from the top of your water
butt on your downpipe. Make a pencil mark.
Then 30mm further down from that make
another mark. These are the points where you
will be cutting your
pipe.

|
|
2.Get a hacksaw and have
no fear. Cut through the down pipe at the
points you have marked. This will leave a
30mm gap in the
pipe!
|

|
|
3.Fit the rain diverter to
the top of the exposed pipe and then slot in
bottom of the diverter to the bottom of the
pipe!
|

|
|
4.Now drill a 25mm hole
(big enough for the water butt connector to
fit through) about 80mm from the top of your
water butt.
This was the only point of the installation I
found tricky, but only because I did not have
any big drill bits, so I ended up using a small
drill bit to make a hole and then wiggled
the drill around till the hole was big
enough!

|
5.Once the hole is big
enough put the water butt connector through
the hole (from the inside of the water butt)
and then connect the pipe you previously
connected (as part of the rain diverter) to
the
downpipe.

|
|
6.Wait for it to rain and
watch the water pour into your water butt...
or go inside and have a cuppa and then after
some good rain fall, fill up a watering can
and water the
garden!
